Fellow North Shore pupils show their loud support for Daniel

Staff and students at Belmont Intermediate School on Auckland’s North Shore dressed up in their brightest shirts last week to celebrate Loud Shirt Day (Friday, 18 October), a national fundraising campaign to raise awareness of those Kiwis who use cochlear implants to access sound.

Loud Shirt Day is the annual appeal of The Hearing House (THH) and the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) – the only two charities in New Zealand dedicated to providing access to sound and spoken language through cochlear implants.

Funds raised through Loud Shirt Day ensure The Hearing House and SCIP can continue to provide specialised listening and spoken language therapy to thousands of New Zealanders with cochlear implants.

Year 7 student Daniel Zheng had his cochlear implants fitted when he was just 10 months old, after newborn hearing tests revealed a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

He has been under the specialised care of The Hearing House team for the past 10 years.

His mum Christina says, “We couldn’t have done it without the care and dedication of The Hearing House team.

“Receiving cochlear implants is just the start of the journey – it’s the ongoing support that really makes a difference.

“The Hearing House is the channel connecting the hearing family with deaf children to the deaf community which is great for my kids to know part of their identity as deaf.”
